What is Ozone?

Ozone gas is naturally formed in the atmosphere, when ultraviolet radiation forces atmospheric Oxygen to temporarily re-combine in groups of three atoms, as an energized form of Oxygen (O3).

Ozone gas is also produced by the action of lightning during electrical storms, which then releases the smell, very characteristic of this gas.


Ozone gas may also be produced by commercially available ozone generators.

Ozone gas is unstable and has the unique feature of decomposing to a harmless, non-toxic, environmentally essential and safe material (Oxygen), only 40 minutes following its production, depending upon its temperature and media in which it is bound.

How is Ozone beneficial?

The following indications are scientifically proven:

  • Occlusal pit and fissure caries and root caries.

  • Ozone is effective as a bactericidal agent and as a viral and fungal deactivator.

  • Ozone sterilization action is by oxidation, or "direct kill attack" of biological material.

  • Ozone kills bacteria 3,500 times faster than Chlorine-based agents.

  • Ozone destroys viruses and fungi instantaneously.

  • Ozone is nature's own purifier.

  • Ozone maximizes "biological combustion" of both energy supplies (carbohydrates) and toxins, through highly effective oxidation of compounds, leading to elimination of toxic substances and boosting of the body's own immune system.

Ozone may be employed as a powerful therapeutic agent in both general medicine and dentistry.

Can tooth decay be treated without drilling and filling?

For the first time, the ozone therapy offers, under certain conditions, the healing of caries without the need for a drill and fillings. The ozone therapy is new and revolutionary. Due to its immensely disinfecting capability, ozone gas can fight caries-causing bacteria, which enables the tooth to heal.

Is the treatment painful?

No! The treatment is easy and painless.

Is the application of ozone dangerous?

No. Due to the system's design, only the treatment site on the tooth is exposed to the ozone. Once the treatment is completed, the HealOzone system converts the ozone back into oxygen.

The HealOzone system controls the vacuum via a flow meter and applies the ozone only if the seal is 100% tight. Any leak within the closed system is detected immediately and causes the ozone generator to shut down.


What are alternatives to Ozone treatment?

The traditional filling, i.e., the "amputation" of tooth substance through drilling and application of dental filling material. All dental filling materials known today must be replaced sooner or later and only provide a "long-term dressing" for the teeth.





What do experts think about not removing decayed dentine?

Scientific studies clearly support the ozone therapy. The expert's opinion cannot be evaluated yet, because this therapy is new. Using the ozone treatment and the patient kit, the carious dentin is re-mineralised and, hence, does not have to be removed. The tooth's substance remains intact.

How long after ozone treatment does bacteria re-inhibit?

A re-mineralised caries lesion is more resistant against new caries invasion than healthy enamel or healthy dentin. There are no side-effects if re-mineralised caries lesions are re-treated with ozone. The re-colonisation of the lesion mainly depends on the patient's oral hygiene. A new treatment with ozone is possible.

How does the patient kit work?

The HealOzone patient kit is a three step system specifically designed to help in the remineralizing process. It contains calcium, phosphate, zinc and xylitol.
Ideally it should be used for about 2-3 weeks.
